Passive cooling

Thermal boxes & insulated packaging

Passive thermal packaging maintains temperature without an external power source. Pre-conditioned phase change materials (PCM) or gel packs combined with high-performance insulation deliver defined temperature windows over hours to days.

va-Q-tec thermal boxes

Vacuum-insulated high-performance packaging with hold times of up to 120 hours. Ideal for GDP-compliant pharma transports in the +2 to +8 °C range.

Intelsius thermal boxes

Phase change material (PCM) based packaging for defined temperature windows. Validated profiles for various climate zones and seasons.

Insulated cartons

Cost-efficient solution for shorter transport times and ambient ranges. EPS or PU insulation with pre-conditioned gel packs.

Active cooling

Calibrated refrigerated vehicles

Active cooling systems continuously regulate temperature via the vehicle's refrigeration unit. This enables any transport duration – independent of external conditions.

Calibrated refrigerated vehicles

Our vehicles feature calibrated temperature recording and are regularly qualified to GDP requirements. Temperature ranges from -25 to +25 °C.

Multi-zone capability

Simultaneous transport of different temperature ranges in one vehicle via separate cooling zones with independent temperature control.

End-to-end documentation

Automatic temperature recording every 5 minutes. Calibration certificates and mapping reports available for every vehicle.

Temperature-controlled transport across Europe

Every shipment is monitored in real time – from packaging to delivery at the destination.

Dry ice

Dry ice packaging: -60 to -80 °C

For products that require extremely low temperatures – reliable, safe and regulatory-compliant.

Controlled temperature range

Dry ice sublimates at -78.5 °C and reliably maintains products between -60 and -80 °C. Suitable for mRNA vaccines, biological samples and deep-frozen active ingredients.

Refill logistics

For longer transport times we arrange dry ice refill stations along the route. Sublimation rates and quantities are calculated in advance.

Safety & regulations

Dry ice is classified as Class 9 dangerous goods. Our drivers are ADR-trained, vehicles are ventilated and all documents (UN 1845) are prepared in advance.

Liquid nitrogen

Cryogenic shipping: -150 to -196 °C

Liquid nitrogen dewars for the most demanding temperature requirements – cell therapies, stem cells and gene therapy products.

Liquid nitrogen dewars

Specialised dewar vessels maintain temperatures from -150 to -196 °C for several days. Suitable for cell and gene therapies, stem cells and tissues.

Specialist handling

Trained staff for handling cryogenic materials. Personal protective equipment, safety protocols and emergency procedures are standard.

Validated transport chains

Every cryogenic shipment is individually planned. Fill-level calculations, route optimisation and contingency scenarios are part of every transport plan.

Frequently asked questions about thermal packaging

Which packaging types do you offer?
We offer passive thermal packaging (va-Q-tec, Intelsius thermal boxes, insulated cartons), active cooling via calibrated refrigerated vehicles, dry ice packaging for -60 to -80 °C and cryogenic solutions with liquid nitrogen dewars for -150 to -196 °C. The selection is made individually based on your product and transport duration.
How long do passive thermal packagings hold temperature?
Hold time depends on the packaging type and ambient conditions. va-Q-tec thermal boxes reach up to 120 hours in the +2 to +8 °C range. Intelsius PCM packaging is validated for defined time windows. We advise you on the optimal solution for your specific transport duration.
What does qualified thermal packaging cost?
Costs vary by packaging type, size and transport requirements. Passive packaging starts in the double-digit euro range per shipment, cryogenic solutions are correspondingly more elaborate. We will gladly prepare an individual quote based on your specific requirements.
How does cloud-based temperature monitoring work?
We use Tive sensors that capture temperature and position every 5 minutes and transmit them via the cloud. You receive a personal tracking link and are alerted immediately by email or SMS in case of deviations. All data is audit-ready and exportable as PDF.
Which regulations apply to dry ice shipments?
Dry ice is classified as Class 9 dangerous goods (UN 1845). Shipments must be labelled and declared accordingly. Our drivers are ADR-trained, vehicles are ventilated and all required documents are prepared in advance. For air freight, additional IATA regulations apply.
Is your packaging reusable?
Yes, many of our thermal boxes (in particular va-Q-tec and Intelsius) are designed for multiple use. After every use they are cleaned, inspected and reconditioned. This reduces costs and is sustainable. Single-use insulated cartons are available for cost-optimised individual shipments.
How does customs clearance work for thermal packaging on international shipments?
Thermal packaging with dry ice or liquid nitrogen requires specific customs documents (safety data sheets, dangerous goods declarations). We take care of the full documentation and work with experienced customs agents at all relevant border crossings.
How often are your temperature sensors calibrated?
All Tive sensors and vehicle-mounted temperature recorders are calibrated regularly. Calibration certificates are documented and can be provided for GDP audits. Calibration is performed in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025.
