We coordinate customs and BfArM clearance for your shipment: presentation of the import licence, BtM number matching, customs handling and release for onward distribution to licensed recipients.

Unbroken cold chain and BtM chain of custody from the EU-GMP-certified origin warehouse (e.g. Portugal, Canada) across the border to delivery at the wholesaler or pharmacy pre-warehouse in Germany.

BtMG, GDP and what you need to consider

The transport of medical cannabis is subject to both the German Narcotics Act (BtMG) and pharmaceutical GDP guidelines. We know both worlds.

1BtMG requirements

Cannabis is classified as a controlled narcotic. Transport requires a valid BtM permit (German narcotics permit) for all parties involved, BtM delivery notes in triplicate, tamper-proof sealing and an identity check at every handover. Violations can have criminal consequences.

2GDP requirements

As a medicinal product, medical cannabis is subject to the EU GDP guidelines. This means: qualified means of transport, calibrated temperature sensors, documented SOPs, trained staff and a functioning CAPA system. All processes must be auditable.

3Documentation obligations

The combination of BtMG and GDP creates extensive documentation obligations: temperature logs, BtM delivery notes, handover protocols, GPS records and seal checks must be produced without gaps and archived for at least five years.

Do you need a BtM permit to transport medical cannabis?

Yes. The transport of medical cannabis is subject to the German Narcotics Act (BtMG). TempSecure only works with senders and recipients who hold a valid BtM permit. We verify these before every transport and document the results without gaps.

Which GDP requirements apply specifically to cannabis transports?

Medical cannabis is considered a medicinal product and is subject to the EU GDP guidelines. This includes qualified means of transport, calibrated temperature sensors, documented standard operating procedures (SOPs), trained staff and effective deviation management. TempSecure has been GDP-certified since January 2026 and fully meets all requirements.

Which temperatures must be maintained during cannabis transport?

Cannabis flowers are typically transported at +15 to +25 °C (room temperature). Cannabis extracts and dronabinol require active cooling at +2 to +8 °C. We use calibrated thermal boxes with PCM packs that offer hold times of up to 120 hours depending on the requirement.

How is tamper protection ensured during transport?

Every shipment is sealed against tampering. We use seals and numbered tags whose condition is documented at pickup and delivery. In addition, an identity check is carried out at every handover. GPS monitoring ensures that there are no unscheduled stops.

What documentation is created for cannabis transport?

Per transport we create: BtM delivery note in triplicate, complete temperature log, handover protocol with identity check, GPS route record and digital proof of delivery. All documents are archived digitally for at least 5 years and are available for audits at any time.

Can you also carry out international cannabis transports?

Yes. We transport medical cannabis within the EU, in particular on the Amsterdam – Germany route. For international transports we take into account the narcotics regulations of all transit countries and coordinate the necessary import and export permits with the responsible authorities.

How quickly can you provide a vehicle for a cannabis transport?

As a rule we provide a qualified vehicle within 2 hours. For scheduled transports the vehicle is assigned 24 hours in advance, with proactive checking of all documents, routes and regulatory requirements. Our 24/7 hotline guarantees availability on weekends and holidays too.

What happens if there is a temperature deviation during transport?

Our Tive cloud system monitors temperature every 5 minutes and triggers an alarm immediately on deviations. Our dispatch team initiates countermeasures directly – from adjusting the climate control to providing a replacement vehicle. Every deviation is documented and worked up as part of a root cause analysis.
